14 June 2006, PRESS CONFERENCE. Palazzo Vecchio, Florence |
Founded by the IKO, Italia Konzert Opera, in 1997, the Festival
offers "Open Air" performances, in historic
cities of notable tourist interest, with sets especially created to
further enhance charming places such as medieval
squares, amphitheatres and historic parks. Places which make Italy
unique in all the world.
Since its beginnings, the Festival has not only seen a steady
increase not only in audience participation and attention
from the mass media, but also sin the contributions made by
local public institutions and administrations. This support
has helped the Festival grow and expand to many other cities in Italy.
The STAGIONE LIRICA
di SAN GIMIGNANO (SAN GIMIGNANO SUMMER OPERA SEASON),
now in its 73rd season and is the oldest Summer opera season after
the Arena in Verona. Since 2001, it has become an integral part of the Summer Opera
Circuit.
In the romantic setting of piazza Duomo in Sam Gimignano, not far from Siena, there can be
found a particularly cultivated and expert audience.
Other places of extraordinary beauty both architecturally and
panoramically have also become hosts to the Opera Circuit, such as the piazza dei Priori
in VOLTERRA, a scenic hillside town
a few kilometers from Pisa; piazza Signorelli in CORTONA, an Etruscan town well
frequented by foreign tourists, and Villa di Scornio in PISTOIA,
a city well known for its opera heritage.
The other towns on the itinerary are no less enchanting and include SERAVEZZA, a
historic village in Versilia, situated between the sea and the
Apuan Alps, and also MONTERSPERTOLI, a peaceful town on the hills
of Florence.
The itinerary continues on to the province of Arezzo to include
BIBBIENA, in the piazza Tarlati, SAN GIOVANNI VALDARNO, the birthplace
of Masaccio, and MONTEVARCHI.
The Festival has gone beyond the confines of the region
in which it began and for which it remained for the first
years of its existence, bringing its operas to many other
regions: Umbria, Marche, Emilia Romagna, Veneto
and Lazio. In 2006 it has added Lombardia,
Friuli Venezia Giulia and Puglia
to its itinerary as well.
